Do you love the ambiance of burning candles but get a headache from them? You are not alone. As a maker of Zentao soy wax candles, I know this problem from personal experience: paraffin candles give me a headache, while I can work for hours with our soy wax candles without any issues.
This personal experience has put me on a mission: to create candles that everyone can enjoy, including people with migraines or sensitive noses. In this blog, I will share what I have learned about scented candles and headaches, and how you can enjoy candles without discomfort.
Why do scented candles cause headaches?
There are several reasons why scented candles can cause headaches:
1. Petroleum fumes from paraffin
Paraffin candles are made from petroleum, a fossil fuel. When paraffin burns, small amounts of substances like toluene and benzene can be released. For people with migraines or sensitive airways, these fumes can be a trigger.
This is exactly what I experience myself: after an hour in a room with burning paraffin candles, I feel the pressure behind my eyes starting. That familiar precursor to a headache.
2. Synthetic fragrances with phthalates
Many cheap candles use synthetic fragrances that contain phthalates, chemicals that make the scent last longer. Phthalates are known migraine triggers for sensitive people.
3. Essential oils in too high concentrations
Ironically, even "natural" candles with essential oils can cause headaches. Essential oils are highly concentrated and can be overwhelming, especially in small spaces. Here you can read why I do NOT use essential oils in my candles but do in daily life.
Known migraine triggers:
- Peppermint (too sharp)
- Eucalyptus (too strong)
- Lavender (in high concentrations)
- Citrus oils (too intense)
4. Poor combustion and soot
Candles with lead wicks or poor-quality wicks produce more soot. These soot particles in the air can cause respiratory irritation and headaches.
5. Too strong scent concentration
Some candles are simply too heavily fragranced. What smells good to one person can be overwhelming for someone with a migraine.
My personal experience: from headache to relief
When I started making soy wax candles, it wasn't just a business decision; it was personal. I loved the ambiance of candles but always got a headache from them.
What I discovered:
Paraffin candles = headache
- After 30-60 minutes, I felt pressure behind my eyes
- My nose became irritated
- Sometimes even nausea
- I had to extinguish the candles and ventilate
Soy wax candles without essential oils = no headache
- I can work for hours in my studio with multiple candles burning
- No pressure, no irritation, no nausea
- My cats even lie nearby without bother
- Finally, I could enjoy scented candles!
This difference motivated me to start Zentao. If I experienced this difference, there must be more people with the same problem.
Why soy wax candles are better for migraine-sensitive people
1. Cleaner burning
Soy wax is plant-based and burns much cleaner than petroleum-based paraffin. At Zentao, we use 100% natural soy wax from Sweden, without synthetic additives.
Result: no petroleum fumes that trigger headaches.
2. No essential oils
This is crucial: at Zentao, we do not use essential oils. Instead, we use specially formulated fragrance oils that are:
- Milder than essential oils
- Not overwhelming
- Carefully tested for safety
- In moderate concentrations
This makes a huge difference for people with migraines. Essential oils can be too intense (combination of burning), even if they are natural.
3. No phthalates or parabens
We read all SDS (Safety Data Sheets) for our fragrance oils and consciously avoid:
- Phthalates (disruptive, migraine trigger)
- Parabens (irritating)
- Other toxic additives
4. Cleaner wicks
We only use cotton and wooden wicks without metal wire. This means:
- Less soot
- Cleaner burning
- No metal fumes
- Soothing (not overwhelming) crackling sound (with wooden wicks)
5. Moderate scent concentration
Our candles are fragranced, but not overwhelming. The scent is present but subtle, perfect for sensitive noses.
Which scents are safe for migraine-sensitive people?
Not all scents are created equal. Some are milder and less triggering than others.
Safe, mild scents (what we use):
✅ Vanilla - soft, comforting, rarely a trigger ✅ Coconut - mild and relaxing ✅ Fruity scents - strawberry, apple, pear (not too sharp) ✅ Gourmand scents - caramel, cookies, chocolate (comfortable) ✅ Soft floral scents - in low concentrations
Scents to avoid with migraine:
❌ Peppermint - too sharp, known trigger ❌ Eucalyptus - too medicinal, too strong ❌ Too strong citrus - can cause headaches ❌ Cinnamon - sometimes too intense for sensitive people ❌ Lavender in high concentrations - can paradoxically cause headaches
Practical tips for enjoying scented candles without headaches
1. Start with short sessions
If you are prone to headaches:
- Start with a 4-hour burn session
- Observe how you feel
- Gradually build up to multiple sessions
2. Choose the right room
- Light candles in larger spaces (living room vs. bathroom)
- Avoid very small, enclosed spaces
- A larger space naturally dilutes the scent
3. Ventilation can help (but is not always necessary)
With high-quality soy wax candles, ventilation is not strictly necessary (I work without ventilation in my studio), but if you are extra sensitive:
- Open a window slightly
- This gives you control over the scent intensity
4. Pay attention to your body
Early warning signs:
- Slight pressure behind the eyes
- Nose starting to irritate
- Slight discomfort
Action: Extinguish the candle before it becomes a full headache. Listen to your body!
5. Test different scents
What works for one person doesn't work for everyone. Test different scents to discover which ones you tolerate well.
My tip: Start with vanilla or coconut; these are the mildest scents.
6. Choose quality over price
Cheap candles are often the biggest culprits:
- Cheap chemical fragrances
- Poor quality wax
- Phthalates and parabens
- Lead wicks
Invest in quality; it literally saves you a headache.
7. Avoid multi-scent overload
Do not light multiple candles with different scents at the same time. This can be overwhelming, even with mild scents.
The science behind scent and migraine
Why do scents trigger migraines at all?
Osmophobia: sensitivity to smells, occurs in 25-50% of people with migraines. The trigeminal nervous system (responsible for facial sensation) can overreact to strong stimuli, including smells.
Interesting: It is not always the scent itself, but its chemical composition. That is why natural essential oils can sometimes be worse than carefully formulated synthetic fragrance oils.
This confirms my experience: it is not about "natural vs. synthetic" but about clean burning and moderate concentrations.
Why I started Zentao
My headache experience with paraffin candles was the catalyst for Zentao. I wanted to make candles that:
- Burn cleanly without petroleum fumes
- Do not contain essential oils that can be dangerous when burned
- Have moderate scent concentrations
- Everyone can enjoy, including people with migraines
The result: I can now work for hours in my studio, surrounded by burning candles and my two cats, without even a hint of a headache.
If I experience the difference so strongly, I know there are more people who have the same problem. And they also deserve to be able to enjoy scented candles.
Conclusion: Yes, you can enjoy scented candles without headaches
Do you get headaches from scented candles? Then it's probably not you, but the candles.
The solution:
- ✅ Choose soy wax candles over paraffin
- ✅ Avoid essential oils in scented candles
- ✅ Choose brands without phthalates and parabens
- ✅ Start with mild scents like vanilla or coconut
- ✅ Pay attention to your body and extinguish at the first signs
- ✅ Invest in quality
My personal experience proves it: the difference between paraffin candles (headache within an hour) and high-quality soy wax candles without essential oils (no problems for hours) is enormous.
At Zentao, we make candles with love and care, not just for ambiance, but also for people who, like me, thought for years that they were "just sensitive to candles." You're not too sensitive; you just hadn't found the right candles yet. 🕯️
