You bought a beautiful soy wax candle, lit it, and... after a few burns, you see a tunnel in the middle, the wick is too long, or the candle no longer burns properly. Sound familiar?
As a maker of Zentao soy wax candles, I often receive questions about candle care. The good news: with proper care, your soy wax candle will last 50% longer and burn perfectly from start to finish. In this guide, I'll share everything you need to know.
Why is care important?
Soy wax candles are natural products that react differently from paraffin candles. They have a lower melting point and a softer structure. This makes them more environmentally friendly and longer-burning, but it also means they require proper care.
Good care ensures:
- ✅ Longer burn time (up to 50% more!)
- ✅ Even burning without tunneling
- ✅ Better scent throw
- ✅ Less soot
- ✅ Safer burning
The Golden Rule: The First Burn
This is the most important tip to remember:
Let your candle burn completely the first time for a full 4 hours.
When you light your soy wax candle for the first time, you must let it burn for at least 4 hours (depending on the diameter) until the entire top is liquid, from edge to edge or until there is hang up. This will catch up later so that no residue remains.
Why is this so crucial?
Soy wax has a "memory." The first time you burn the candle determines how wide the wax will melt on all subsequent burns. If you extinguish the candle too soon (e.g., after 30 minutes), the wax will only melt in the middle, and it will remain that way every time thereafter.
Result: Tunneling - a deep tunnel in the middle with unused wax on the edges. What a waste!
My tip: Plan your first burn for a time when you'll be home for a while, such as a quiet evening, a workday at home, or the weekend.
Wick Care: The Key to Perfect Burning
Trim your wick before every burn
For cotton wicks:
- Trim the wick to 5-6 mm before lighting the candle.
- Use a wick trimmer, scissors, or break it off with your fingers.
- Remove the trimmed pieces from the wax.
For wooden wicks:
- Trim off the cooled, black edge and break it off with your fingers.
- Keep the wick at 3-5 mm.
- Remove any loose wood pieces.
Why is this important?
A wick that is too long causes:
- ❌ Large, flickering flame
- ❌ Sooting
- ❌ Too fast burning
- ❌ Black smoke
- ❌ Black residue on the glass
A properly trimmed wick ensures:
- ✅ Stable, calm flame
- ✅ Clean burning
- ✅ Optimal scent throw
- ✅ Longer burn time
When to trim?
- Always when the candle is extinguished (never on a burning candle!)
- Before each time you light the candle
- If you notice the flame getting too large
Wooden wicks: extra tip
Wooden wicks can sometimes be harder to light after trimming. Tip: Hold the lighter to the wick a little longer (5-10 seconds) until the wood is burning well. The soft crackling sound (not overpowering) only comes when the wick is burning properly.
Burn Time: Not Too Short, Not Too Long
Minimum burn time: 4 hours
Never burn your candle for less than 4 hours. Why?
- The wax needs time to fully melt.
- Short sessions lead to tunneling.
- The scent only fully develops after 30-45 minutes.
Maximum burn time: 4 to 6 hours
Do not burn your candle for longer than 4 hours (max 6 hours) at a time. Why?
- The wick becomes too long and starts to "mushroom" (black knob).
- The glass can become too hot.
- Safety risk.
Ideal session: 4 hours at a time.
Tunneling: Prevention and Resolution
What is tunneling?
Tunneling is when your candle only melts in the middle, creating a deep tunnel with unused wax on the edges.
Solving it if it has already happened:
Method 1: Aluminum foil trick
- Light the candle.
- Wrap aluminum foil around the top (make a "hood").
- Leave an opening in the middle for the flame.
- The foil reflects heat to the edges.
- Let it burn until all the wax has melted (2-3 hours).
- Carefully remove the foil.
Method 2: Hair dryer
- Do this with a cooled candle.
- Set the hairdryer to the warmest but gentlest setting.
- Aim at the edges inside the candle from far enough away (otherwise, splashes).
- Soy wax has a low melting point, so it will melt gently.
- Do not hold the hairdryer too close, or everything will be covered.
- Blow until you get an even pool and let it cool completely (1 hour) before relighting it.
Soot and Black Smoke: Causes and Solutions
Why does soot occur?
Soy wax candles normally produce little soot, but it can happen due to:
- Wick too long
- Draft (flame flickers)
- Wick not centered
- Foreign objects in the wax (wick trimmings, matches)
Solutions:
✅ Trim the wick to 5-6 mm ✅ Avoid drafts - do not place the candle near open windows or fans ✅ Keep the wax clean - remove wick trimmings and other debris ✅ Center the wick - gently push a warm wick back to the center
Cleaning black glass:
- Let the candle cool.
- Wipe the glass clean with a damp cloth.
- For stubborn soot: use some vinegar on a cloth.
Maximizing Scent Throw
Tips for better fragrance:
✅ Choose the right room - smaller rooms = stronger scent ✅ Close doors - the scent lingers better ✅ Give it time - scent only fully develops after 30-45 minutes ✅ Place strategically - a central spot in the room works best
Why can't I smell my candle anymore?
Scent fatigue: Your nose gets used to the scent after 15-30 minutes. You no longer smell it, but others do!
Solution: Leave the room for a moment and come back; you will smell the scent again.
Storage and Preservation
How to store soy wax candles?
✅ Cool and dry - not in direct sunlight ✅ Optionally with a lid - prevents dust and preserves scent ✅ Upright - do not tilt (wax can shift) ✅ Away from heat - soy wax melts at low temperatures
Curing: Patience Pays Off
Here's something interesting: Soy wax candles become stronger in scent the longer they sit!
This is called "curing" - the fragrance oils need time to fully integrate into the soy wax.
Ideal curing time:
- Minimum 1-2 weeks after making
- Optimal: 4-6 weeks
- Some scents even get stronger after months
Tip: Have you bought a new candle? Wait a week or two before lighting it; the scent will be more intense!
Shelf life: Soy wax candles remain good for 1-2 years if stored properly. Unlike some other candles, the scent does not weaken but actually gets stronger in the first few months. After a year, the scent stabilizes.
Safety: Important Rules
Do's:
✅ Place on a stable, heat-resistant surface ✅ Keep flammable materials (curtains, paper) at a distance ✅ Keep out of reach of children and pets ✅ Never leave burning unattended ✅ Extinguish before sleeping or leaving the house
Don'ts:
❌ Never move while the candle is burning ❌ Never throw water on a burning candle ❌ Never light if less than 1 cm of wax remains ❌ Never burn in an enclosed cabinet or small space
Last Bit of Wax: What Now?
When to stop burning?
Stop burning when there is still 1 cm of wax left at the bottom. Why?
- The glass can get too hot.
- The wick can touch the bottom (fire hazard).
- Safety risk.
What do you do with the last of the wax?
Method 1: Hot water method
- Pour hot (just before boiling) water into the jar.
- The wax melts and floats to the top.
- Let cool.
- Remove the wax disk.
- Pour away the water.
- Wash the jar with soap and warm water; now you have a reusable jar!
Method 2: Hot water method in the sink
- Place the candle in the sink and fill the sink with hot water (do not let water get into the candle).
- Let it sit for a while so the edges can melt.
- Remove the remaining wax with a spoon and discard.
- Wash the jar clean.
Reuse your candle jar:
- Small plant pot
- Makeup brush holder
- Pen holder
- Storage for small items
At Zentao, we use reusable glass, and we encourage you to give the jars a second life! ♻️
Common Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)
Mistake 1: Burning too short
❌ Problem: Tunneling ✅ Solution: Minimum 4 hours per session
Mistake 2: Not trimming the wick
❌ Problem: Soot, large flame, burns too quickly ✅ Solution: Trim to 5-6 mm before every burn
Mistake 3: Burning the candle too long
❌ Problem: Overheating, safety risk ✅ Solution: Maximum 4 hours per session
Mistake 4: Leaving wick trimmings in the wax
❌ Problem: Soot, uneven burning ✅ Solution: Always remove trimmed wick pieces
Mistake 5: Placing the candle in a draft
❌ Problem: Flickering flame, soot, uneven burning ✅ Solution: Place in a draft-free spot
